From contract to completion: dyke reinforcement Afsluitdijk

Sail along and see the renovated dyke revetment from the Wadden Sea

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Afsluitdijk. The Afsluitdijk is being prepared for the future. On the Wadden Sea side, we are reinforcing the dyke with 70,000 innovative concrete blocks specially developed for the Afsluitdijk: Levvel blocks. These blocks are so strong that they can withstand the waves hitting the dike during a heavy storm. The dike will be raised by 2 metres and become surge-resistant. Since 2019, we have been working on reinforcing and renewing the Afsluitdijk. By the end of 2022, the dyke reinforcement will be almost complete. But what preceded this? From contract to realisation, find out on 5, 6 or 7 September next. KIVI is basically scheduled for the Tuesday, however, KIVI members may also join on other days.

A look behind the scenes

We would like to invite you, as a KIVI member, to take a look behind the scenes of project Afsluitdijk from the water. We will take you from contract to realisation of the dyke reinforcement. Besides the dyke reinforcement, we will also tell you how and why we are making a cut in the dyke for the Vismigration River. Colleagues working on the project will give the following presentations:

The boat 'Regina Andrea' departs from Den Oever. Two weeks before departure, you will receive more information by e-mail about the exact location in the harbour.

A large part of the Netherlands lies below sea level. This makes our country vulnerable to flooding. The Afsluitdijk has protected large parts of the Netherlands from flooding from the sea since 1932. But the dike is in need of renewal. It does not meet the current legal standards for water safety. More water also needs to be drained. That is why Rijkswaterstaat is reinforcing and renewing the Afsluitdijk. So that the Netherlands is also protected from water in the future.

The Afsluitdijk has protected a large part of the Netherlands against the force of water for 90 years. The Afsluitdijk is now being prepared for the future. We are reinforcing the dike on the Wadden Sea side with 70,000 innovative concrete blocks - Levvel-blocs - especially developed for the Afsluitdijk. These blocks are so strong that they are able to withstand the waves that may crash against the dike during a heavy storm. We will increase the height of the dike by almost two metres. In addition, the dike will be able to withstand surge overflows. This means that it is not serious when water surges across the dike during a heavy storm. A look behind the scenes

We would like to invite you, as a (future/ civil) engineer to take a look behind the scenes of the Afsluitdijk project from a boat overlooking the renewed revetment. You can listen to presentations about the early beginning of the project until now, the construction phase. A hole in the dam? You heard it right. The Afsluitdijk protects our country against the water, but also poses an obstruction to many types of fish. The Fish Migration River will ensure that fish will be able to swim from salt to fresh water again.
