On Friday 29 November, KIVI Hydraulic Engineering is organising a project visit to the New Lock in Terneuzen!

The New Lock will provide better access and smoother flow from the Westerschelde to the Ghent Canal to Terneuzen and beyond. As a result, the New Lock will create new economic activities in both the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Flemish regions. With the arrival of the New Lock, larger seagoing vessels will be able to sail up to Ghent port through the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. It also increases the capacity of the locks, reducing waiting time for inland vessels. In October 2024, the first vessel sailed through the New Lock after its opening by King Willem-Alexander and King Philip. The Flemish-Dutch Scheldt Commission is the client and contractor combination Sassevaart built the New Lock.

The new lock has the following dimensions: 427 metres long, 55 metres wide and 16.44 metres deep (the same size as the new locks in the Panama Canal). The lock can accommodate large ocean-going vessels up to 366 metres long, 49 metres wide and 14.5 metres deep.
