Renewal of engineering structures in the A59
Description
The bridge over the Drongelens Kanaal and the viaduct over the Hoogeindse Rondweg near Waalwijk are in need of replacement due to increased traffic on the A59. Client Rijkswaterstaat commissioned Combinatie Colijn / Rasenberg for this replacement. The span of the bridge will also be extended so that an ecological connecting zone can be realised.
.
During construction, traffic on the A59 should experience as little disruption as possible. To this end, a temporary road diversion with emergency bridge will be constructed on the south side of the current A59. The Waalwijk-Oost junction will remain available.
The new engineering structures will be wider and longer, allowing the maximum speed to be increased to 100 km/h after completion of the works. Due to space constraints, the entry lane of the Drunen-West junction and the exit lane of the Waalwijk-Oost junction will be merged by means of a weaving section.
Work on the temporary road diversion has already started. In November, the contractor consortium will complete the temporary road diversion. Following this, demolition and construction of the new structures will begin. Traffic will then be converted back to the new situation in mid-November 2016. All work will be fully completed by the end of April 2017.
