Description

In the activities surrounding the 121st association year of The Society "Practical Study", a Symposium cannot be missing. It is therefore an honour for the CiO 2014 to organise a major event this year on 2 December 2014. The theme is: Stadiums.
The aim of the Symposium is therefore to provide insight into stadium construction. This within the overarching theme of Sustainable Development, where it is important to look at things from all different angles.

Starting with engineering: how is such a great feat of Civil Engineering realised? What are the innovations within stadium construction? With notions of sustainability and incorporation in mind, new construction methods are becoming increasingly realistic. This will delve into both floating and demountable stadiums.

Besides technology, traffic management around a stadium will also be highlighted. Events held in stadiums naturally attract many visitors. The surrounding infrastructure networks should be able to cope with the effects of such attractions.

Not to be forgotten then are the social aspects of building a stadium. Many stadiums are built in poorer countries, where violations of labour rights are unfortunately still common.

What are the stadiums of the future? This question is at the heart of the kick-off to an amazing, but above all an informative and innovative Symposium. At a special location, after following fascinating lectures and case studies, there will be room for a debate. Here, all sides of the story will be revisited, working towards an answer to this question.
