Description

The theme of the Water Construction Day 2016 is 'High or Dry', in other words: when reclaiming land, do we choose land raising or making a polder? And what is that choice based on?

To answer the question 'raising the ground or making a polder', we first have to go back to the past. Over the centuries, land reclamation was always done by reclamation. When a salt marsh or mudflat was sufficiently silted up, the territory was secured by building a dike around it. So to speak, reclamation is our national reflex and a method we have also been able to use abroad for centuries. In Germany along the Weser and Elbe rivers, in England the Fens, near Boston and in India we drained swamps for agriculture.

The technique worked so well that in the Golden Age the idea arose to invest part of the trade profits in land reclamation by draining the lakes in North Holland. The Beemster was the first lake to be drained by Leeghwater. Initially not so successful, as the polder filled up again within a year, but ultimately an excellent project.

These issues and interesting projects will be discussed at the Water Construction Day 2016, on 10 November 2016 at the Doelen in Rotterdam. An exhibition is part of the programme, as is the presentation of the Hydraulic Engineering Award.
