Quooker, theme Onshoring Manufacturing through Continuous Innovation
Company visit Quooker
An idea conceived during a meeting at Unilever, which has now grown almost 30 years later into a product that will take kitchens around the world by storm. That is the tap from Quooker. With the theme of Making Industry Through Continuous Innovation, KIVI members had an inspiring afternoon at the family-owned company.
In the reception hall, a beautiful wall was on display of the Quooker company's timeline, from Mr Peteri's inspiration in 1970 to the latest product, the Cube. "The story of the Quooker is actually a boy's dream for every engineer," Bas Hermanns addressed all interested parties who had come to Ridderkerk today. In an interesting presentation, the host recounted the entire innovation process Quooker has gone through. From the design facets to the technical challenges that were especially important in the early years.
With all the knowledge of the product in our heads, we could see what the manufacturing process looked like in the production hall. A tour was given in groups of five to six people. Because of the strong growth Quooker is experiencing, the layout of production hall is also constantly changing. Various production lines were highly organised to ensure optimal assembly.
To conclude, another insight was given into the development of production technology at Quooker. Jan van Reede gave some great examples on how Quooker manages to solve issues concerning the production process. The audience also spoke up, which led to a fascinating discussion. While enjoying a snack and a drink, all thoughts could be exchanged once more. For KIVI members, this was a very interesting afternoon at the beautiful innovation company Quooker B.V.

In the period 2015-2018, by means of excursions and two symposia, we paid attention to bringing Make Industry back to the Netherlands, the so-called ReShoring.
Now we draw your attention to an example of highly innovative Dutch entrepreneurship in the Make Industry, -Quooker-, a company that wants to stay connected to the Netherlands through continuous product innovation; 'OnShoring' in other words. Very recently, Quooker again drew attention to its latest product features through a media campaign.
Unlike app development, true product innovation can often be a long and laborious process. The long road to the current Quooker activity is a textbook example of this.
The Quooker brings together many aspects of product development, such as flow and heat learning, fine mechanics, materials science, electronics, ergonomics, design for fabrication and installation and so on.
Mr Peteri sr. started developing this concept he had conceived in the early 1970s in the garage of his home. Some ten years later, the first products were launched on the market.
Today, two sons Peteri are continuing their father's company very energetically; they will explain their policy to this end.
We asked our Host Lady to pay particular attention to the reasons for 'OnShoring' in the Netherlands during this visit. In this particular case, we were asked to pay attention to the often difficult innovation process that preceded Mr Peteri Sr's success. This as a lesson and encouragement to young technicians to certainly not shun the step to becoming an inventor, but to point out beforehand the perseverance and great sacrifices that one must be prepared to make for it.
Check the proposition: "Off shoring of Manufacturing Industry is usually a sign of impotence"
