Nappy Recycling at ARN: an innovative circular solution
Following a call in the industry to develop a better destination for the processing of nappies, ARN, in collaboration with Elsinga Policy Planning & Innovation, embraced it. The result is a unique project.
Since opening in September 2021, ARN will process 15,000 tonnes of nappies a year, the first in the world to do so in this way. Will the method also be assessed as recycling? In the second revision of the National Waste Management Plan 3, sector plan 84 nappy recycling states that the nappy stream is one of the monostreams for which recycling is desirable and technically possible. LAP3 sets out the framework as to what nappy recycling is. The processing method at ARN fits within these new frameworks.

From a business point of view, we mainly look at the companies' managerial and operational issues.
We asked ARN to highlight the following aspects:
- what business cases did you make before the LRI could be realised,
- what difficult choices did you have to make,
- how did you manage to set up a revenue model,
- what environmental aspects played a role,
- what were the learning moments with hindsight,
- how risky was this initiative,
- when do you expect the whole chain to participate.
Our host for the day is Mr Jacob Vermeulen, manager Resources & Logistics.
Programme:
14.00 am Reception in the visitors' area with coffee/tea
Presentation by Jacob Vermeulen
15.00 Hour Visit to the LRI
16.00 Hour Opportunity to chat with a soft drink and a block of cheese
17.00 Hour closing
You will receive directions after registration . There are 2 entrances, and many navigation systems lead to the truck entrance instead of the visitors' entrance. Would you like to bring your own PPE, especially safety shoes? Helmets are not a problem.
We want to give the host maximum insight into the group that is going to come. Hence, we ask you to indicate at registration: your current employer, date of birth and license plate number, so that all guests can be registered with the doorman. Then everyone does not have to register and identify themselves individually, which saves a lot of time at the gate.
