Renishaw - a British high-tech company and specialist in precision metrology - was founded in 1973 by 2 Rolls Royce employees. Anno 2016, this company has 4,400 employees, 70 branches in 35 countries. With 16 product divisions, it achieves sales of half a billion euros, 16% of which is reinvested in R&D. The focus is on precision systems for metalworking, materials analysis, neurosurgery, dental technology and 3D metal printing.
Re-Shoring opportunities and challenges
There are a number of market developments to keep an eye on: Chinese wages are no longer as low and their internal market is now more important than exports. Product developments and innovations follow each other faster, making product life cycles shorter and series sizes smaller. This makes outsourcing by Western companies more expensive, and further automation and robotisation make manufacturing in the West an attractive alternative again. Operating more machines with fewer, but more highly trained, people. Knowledge and application of process integration and control, product design and best-fit production methodology are indispensable. Training is falling short in this respect, and this is a serious threat to our Western future.
