KIVI (Royal Institute of Engineers) and the Constructeursregister RC/RO/RT are joining forces for the further professionalisation of engineers. Today (Wednesday 9 June 2021), the two organisations have agreed that members of the Constructeursregister can now register directly professionally with KIVI.
PRESS RELEASE
9 June 2021
Professional registration of structural engineers further professionalised
Thanks to the new cooperation agreement, registered designers (ROs) can now qualify directly as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Registered structural engineers (RCs) can be directly registered as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Incorporated Engineer (IEng) are two internationally recognised titles for engineers from all professional disciplines. IEng is for experienced engineers who have at least a bachelor's degree. Those wishing to become CEng must hold at least a master's degree, in addition to the required experience.
In both cases, candidates are tested on their knowledge and understanding of engineering, expertise in developing and designing products, systems and processes, leadership, communication skills and professional (social) commitment, among others. Such testing on core competencies is done not only upon registration, but also periodically for maintaining the recognised title. Through continuing education, the Chartered and Incorporated Engineer should continuously work on their own professional development.
The Registered Structural Engineer Register RC/RO/RT has a corresponding system of testing, admission and mandatory continuing education, but exclusively for engineers professionally engaged in the design and detailing of structures.
The Registered Structural Engineer (RC) is an expert and experienced structural engineer with a thorough education, knowledge and experience in the field of construction, affinity with related fields and a great sense of responsibility. The Registered Designer meets even higher requirements. The RO brings broader work experience and bears ultimate responsibility for structural design and structural safety.
The Constructors' Register and KIVI's Chartered/Incorporated Engineer system not only have a corresponding procedure of assessment, mandatory refresher/assessment training and monitoring; their main objectives are also similar: to promote and monitor the expertise and professionalism of the constructor or engineer. Add to this that the organisations behind both systems trust each other's approach and further cooperation is obvious.
When joining the KIVI system, members of the Constructeursregister no longer have to pay application and assessment fees, although KIVI Chartership Membership is required. Also, because of this collaboration, the RO or RC does not have to re-qualify for the Chartered Register.
