Report
On Thursday 28 September 2006, the mini-symposium commercialising medical services took place in restaurant De Engel in Houten. During this warm post-summer evening, commercial developments in the medical sector were highlighted from various angles.
The kick-off was given by Dr de Ruyter who made a plea for further development of privatisation in healthcare. There were extensive discussions on the pros and cons and the consequences of these private initiatives.
Wim van Ingen Schenau, with his presentation 'market forces turn medical imaging into a consumer product', highlighted how specific developments and needs in the medical sector lead to accelerated product development. specific example is the introduction of real-time 3D ultrasound for 3D imaging of the unborn child.
Prof Willems finally challenged the ethics surrounding commercially available health tests. The critical question was raised whether linking a neutral test with a commercial product is desirable. In addition to commercial tests, tests from neutral organisations such as patient associations are also available.
At the end of the evening, there was an opportunity to make your own 3D ultrasound images using an advanced real-time 3D ultrasound system on a phantom. All in all, a successful meeting could be considered.
