Future Tech and Impact: Or how do you steer trends? And can you steer trends?
Our contention is, science fiction tends to become reality. A well-known example of this phenomenon is the famous "communicators" from Star Trek, after which Motorola later marketed the Star Tac. Or Aldous Huxley's mood-enhancing drugs that can be ordered from the legal (or illegal) pharmacist these days. Or the real-time translators from "The Hitchhiker's GuideTo The Galaxy," which nowadays come in app form on your phone.
In addition to the predictions that have already come true, there are, of course, a plethora of predictions that have not (yet) come true, but are coming to the beginning of the Gartner hype curve. Such as self-driving cars, genetic engineering of humans and use of exo-skeletons. Besides the nicer inventions, there are also a legion of "worrying" developments coming up, as there is always a second side. Which will take our technological capabilities further and further away from our human nature.
It is abundantly clear, eventually our society will start to change. In Japan, they talk about Society 5.0. The KNVI took the first step last year with a new name for the KNVI annual conference: Smart Humanity, which will take place this year on 14 November at the OBA in Amsterdam.
In this event, we want to take the audience with us into the innovations, transitions and disruptions of the future and how we have to steer or are steered by them now. Also because it all seems to be going faster and faster, we talk about the VUCA world (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity). How do you deal with that technology, what rules and guidelines should be in place for companies and individuals to keep the world in balance? But also to keep your business current and relevant? Is this possible at all? Or does "it" happen anyway, and does the black side of technology especially surface, from "Big Brother" to "Minority Report", or are we all smart and sensible enough?
