On Saturday 17 November 2018, Delft will host HighLight, a new event at the intersection of art and technology.
HighLight explores the role art and creativity play in the use of technology and in shaping our living environment. An increasing part of how we live our lives is determined by successful use of technology - or, conversely, its flaws. The Dutch, from Delft in particular, have always been highly skilled in researching, creating and shaping the technologies that make our country and our lives better. HighLight presents art that has been influenced by technological developments (and vice versa), and examines and discusses the impact of these developments on our society.

From 16.00 - 23.00, Theatre de Veste hosts a programme around the theme Artificial Intelligence with a congress, a comedy show, a data detox café and an exhibition. In addition, there will be exhibitions and workshops at various locations around the city. The main locations are Theater de Veste, Open (library) and Science Centre.

HighLight cooperates with many partners, including: Municipality of Delft, Delft University of Technology and Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI). With three programming lines, the festival highlights how technology is used for expression (Express), what effects it has (or can have) on everyday life (Test) and how we as a society can deal with it (Think). The number of paying visitors is estimated at 1500.

The Royal Institute of Engineers is hosting the debate programme from 16.00 to 21.00 in theatre de Veste.

THEME: ARTificial INTELLIGENCE ON BAND?
The innovation of artificial intelligence shows that technical developments in the IT sector are moving extremely fast. It is expected that artificial intelligence will gradually take over more and more.

Criticismof Artificial Intelligence
Besides the fact that there are many advantages to artificial intelligence, more and more people are also critical of this innovation. For instance, computers and machines would become too smart, and we as humanity would at some point lose control over them. Films such as iRobot were already using this concept for movies. At the moment, governments are still busy legislating in this area since this is a completely new concept. How artificial intelligence will develop is still unclear.
