VROM conversion into flexible government office
Rijnstraat office
The tour depicted how the government will work with flexible workplaces in the future and showed how the old Ministry of Vrom was transformed from a building with all small rooms into a modern office. That a 3-year renovation of a mere 23-year-old building was deemed necessary raised many questions. It was noteworthy that during the renovation, the closed end facades were converted into facades with windows and that the floors in the middle section had become voids and existing voids were partly closed to create a walkway through the building. Those present did conclude after the tour that there was now a beautiful building. And of course it was nice to visit the minister's room with its own wet room.
Description
The former Ministry VROM on Rijnstraat from 1992 was designed by Jan Hoogstad for 3,300 civil servants. This building was The PoortCentraal consortium, consisting of OMA, BAM and ISS, converted the ministry into a flexible government office for 6,000 employees of Foreign Affairs, Infrastructure and the Environment, the IND and COA with 4,400 workstations. This involved a new office concept according to the new way of working and removal of all internal walls, ceilings and installations. Also, part of the floors were removed to create voids and part of the voids were closed to create a continuous corridor per floor.
The cost of the project, a PPP construction, amounts to 267 million including maintenance for the next 25 years. The building will go into operation on 19 June
