Description

The 2012 Olympics are coming up! The Sports Engineering Department wants to look at the development of the stadiums together with engineers but also wants to let top athletes have their say. During this symposium, practical cases will be used to give more insight into the development of stadiums. A lot of engineering is hidden in these giant structures. What does an engineer have to deal with? Can the athlete always have a tailwind at the 800m? And how does an elite athlete affect the structure? How can an area development work for the city?

The company Arup has years of experience in the development of stadiums such as the Bird's Nest in Beijing and the AAMI Park in Melbourne but also the new area development of the Heysel Stadium in Brussels passes the review. Arup will act as host this afternoon.

Please note that Arup's two presentations will be given in English.

13:30 Reception with coffee and tea

14:00 Welcome by chairman of the day Arno Hermans

14:05 Opening; Erik Driessen (chairman Sports Engineering)

14:15 Stadium experience of an elite athlete; Karin Ruckstuhl

14:45 Parametric design, optimisation, interoperability and rationalisation - AAMI Park Stadium, Melbourne; Sean McGinn (Arup)

The new AAMI Park stadium comprises a unique and efficient structural shell form. The design approach utilised cutting-edge technologies in the implementation of parametric geometric definition, analysis, design and production to deliver a solution that is now an icon on the Melbourne skyline.

15:30 Break

15:45 Making your stadium work for the area and making your area work for the stadium; Laurens Tait (Arup)

A stadium presents a wealth of challenges for the area, ranging from the technical, political or financial. Designing to take these challenges into account is the task of all professionals of the built environment. The presentation will focus on the relationship between a stadium and its surroundings with a selection of projects from Brussels to Baku, via Nijmegen.
