The Village

The excursion gave a nice insight into the transition of people with disabilities living in institutions to living as independently as possible. Thereby, the explanation of a resident who is confronted with his disability on a daily basis had great added value.

Description

The Village

The Village, known from Mies Bouman's fundraising campaign, was designed by architect Bakema. The buildings take advantage of the very sloping terrain, causing entrances to stagger from floor to floor. The building basically consists of a corridor with dwellings on two sides. One dwelling consisted of a room with corridor and wet room. A conversion about 20 years ago turned 2 dwellings into one and one dwelling comprises a living room with open kitchen and a bedroom with wet room. Each dwelling has its own terrace. Paths across the property are bordered by walls, gardens and terraces. Unfortunately, the buildings are technically outdated (including insulation). It was therefore decided to replace all the buildings and there is a lot of overdue maintenance. The first demolition has now taken place and construction of the first flat block is underway. As an institution, Het Dorp was merged into Siza with around 2,000 residents.

Future

Het Dorp will be a neighbourhood of the future in which people with a disability or chronic illness will learn to live as independently as possible. The district will have 300 homes, 50% of which will be for people with physical disabilities and 50% for people without disabilities. The whole project is due to be completed in 2012.
The development started with the development of the Paswoning, which incorporates every conceivable form of support and home automation. This Paswoning serves as a model home for the 36 new care flats that will be built in the first new building. The building will also house the "Academy Het Dorp" innovation centre, where companies, universities and colleges will conduct permanent research into technological innovations.

Paswoning

The Paswoning includes the usual home automation. The front door, connecting doors, curtains and sliding doors to the terrace can be controlled via a tablet. The closet wall between the living room and the bedroom can be moved, making a larger living room or bedroom. In the ceiling of the bedroom and bathroom, there is a continuous provision for the hoist. The kitchen island in the kitchen is not only movable in height but rotates in such a way that the resident can stay still and use a tablet to turn the hob, sink or countertop forwards. And of course, in the bathroom, the toilet and sink are also height-adjustable.

Environmentally conscious

The developments of Het Dorp are environmentally conscious. For instance, the current demolition has harvested 6,500 tonnes of building material, 99% of which is reusable and 53% of which is reused in Het Dorp. See Het Dorp Vernieuwt - Demolition Enk- en Meentweg
The buildings will also be energy-neutral. A large vessel for energy storage will be built on the site
