Lecture and excursion RUSTENBURG-OOSTBROEK
Description
The residential area of Rustenburg-Oostbroek was largely built between 1924 and 1940. Until then, the De la Reykade formed the southwestern boundary of the city. With the construction of the district, the ditch along the quay was filled in and the profile widened.
The name of both parts of the district on either side of the Escamplaan-Dierenselaan axis goes back to two farms dating from the seventeenth century, in an area bordering Loosduinen, which became increasingly used for arable farming and cattle breeding after 1800.
The southwestern boundary is formed by the Laakkanaal, which was dug from 1924 onwards as a connection between the Loosduinsevaart and the Laakhavens.
THEMES: CITY GOVERNMENT AND CULTURAL HERITAGE Preservation
The residential area was planned in the General Extension Plan of 1908. The current structure still recognises in outline the layout of the time. After the complete annexation of Loosduinen and the construction of the Laak canal, the area around the plan area changed.
The urban plan for the neighbourhood was adapted to this by the Urban Development and Housing Department, which also provided facilities such as shops, schools, a church building and a bathhouse. The neighbourhood consists of four quadrants because of the angled layout of Zuiderparklaan on the Escamplaan-Apeldoornselaan axis. The kink in Escamplaan and its branch to Apeldoornselaan and Dierenselaan is a typical BerIagian monumental accent.
The houses were largely built by private individuals. To guarantee aesthetic quality, these were required to have 'recognised' architects draw up sketch plans and façade schemes for the aforementioned main roads and some other places. The municipality directed the elaboration. This helped to create monumental townscapes that are among the most successful ensembles of the New Hague School.
