Mini seminar Transformation of buildings
Description
The time of growth and new construction is over. Transformation and reallocation of buildings is the main national task for the coming years. Design and the designer play an important role in this task and finding solutions.
There are many vacant buildings (about 9 million m2 in 2014). Demolishing these buildings is not the most obvious choice today. For sustainability reasons, but also for cost reasons, people often look at reusing the building. If the building can be reused, it saves a lot in environmental burden by requiring less transport operations, less energy for demolition and new construction activities, but most importantly, less new material. The approach to such a development differs fundamentally from the approach to a new building. In a new construction, one will design a building to suit the user's programme. When reusing a building, there will be much more of a search for a user that suits the building. Before it can be determined which function best suits a building, it is important to establish what the building's possibilities are.
Here, the role of a structural designer is essential. No two tasks are the same and each project will require a creative approach from the designer to make the project feasible.
The speakers discuss the various redevelopment projects that have now been realised.
We are guests at Industriepark Kleefse Waard (IPKW), which used to house factories of the ENKA group. Most of the AkzoNobel (ENKA) factories have been closed down. The industrial park has now been adapted to the needs of the very many new tenants. With favourable conditions, IPKW offers all entrepreneurs who want to (continue to) grow and innovate the best possible space. Indeed: growth and innovation are the most important drivers in the development of the park.
