New RACM office building - KADE
Description
Along Smallepad in Amersfoort, the new accommodation for the Rijksdienst voor Archeologie, Cultuurlandschap en Monumenten (RACM) is currently under construction. The innovative and transparent building was designed by Spanish architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg. Decisive for the building's design was its location on the edge of the historic city centre and its location along the railway line. At the front of the building there will be a pond, a large canopy and a facetted, backward-sloping facade that carefully establishes the relationship with the Zocherpark. The building's backward-sloping façade reflects the Dutch skies so beautifully painted by 17th-century masters such as Ruysdael and Saenredam. This façade gives the building its nickname: The "Guggenheim of Amersfoort". At the rear, the building becomes more enclosed, due to the presence of the railway yard. Another striking feature of the design is the use of Dutch building materials such as slate, copper and brick for the exterior, and wood and stucco for the interior.
A parking garage will be built under the building, where users of the building can park their cars and bicycles. Besides the Rijksdienst RACM, the building will house the cultural exhibition centre KADE (Kunst aan de Eem) with a museum café, art library and exhibition space.
The building houses a number of laboratory spaces, a photo studio and presentation rooms, which are very sensitive to building vibrations. Thereby, nuisance to people in the building also proved to be a real risk. Because of the building's location along the railway line, it was necessary to provide the building with full vibration isolation, by means of rubber blocks under the ground floor.
