Project Market Hall in Rotterdam
Description
Market Hall Rotterdam
Opposite De Blaak station, a spectacular building is under construction that could well become Rotterdam's new eye-catcher. The Market Hall, designed by architect Winy Maas (MVRDV), will be the first covered food market in the Netherlands. Flats, stacked in a horseshoe-shaped arch, cover the market floor, where there is space for 100 fixed market stalls. A total of 228 flats, both owner-occupied and rented, are included in the arch over 11 floors. The market is flanked on the ground floor on both sides by catering, and food retail related.
Underground is a three-level parking garage, as well as an Albert Heijn shop. The construction of the parking garage required a building pit almost 15 metres deep, 90 metres wide and 117 metres long.
On both end sides, the Market Hall is closed off with a 35-metre-high glass façade. This will be executed as a pre-stressed cable net façade, tensioned to the concrete arch in the end wall.
Construction of the project started in October 2009; the project will be completed in October this year.
