Breda Station nominated for national architecture award.

The building, designed by architect Koen van Velsen, competes in the category 'Identity & iconic value'. The Breda Public Transport Terminal is competing against Museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar and the Town Hall Quarter in Deventer.

The jury selected nine buildings from 113 entries, which will compete in four categories for the highest honour. On 19 May, the winning building will be announced. Voting for the Audience Award is open from Tuesday.

The Public Transport Terminal is a spatial building with a recognisable identity as a station, a meaningful and self-evident landmark in the city. Apart from a bus and (inter)national train station, the Public Transport Terminal contains a wide variety of functions such as flats, office space, commercial spaces, a parking roof, guarded and unguarded bicycle sheds and public outdoor spaces and squares. In the approach of Koen van Velsen architects, the building is not a multifunctional complex containing a transport hub, but a station building in which a large and complex programme has been brought together in a clear way in one strong, recognisable form as part of the city.

The design puts the traveller central. This has resulted in clear, and accessible spaces with a pleasant atmosphere, appropriate allure, great comfort and an optimal experience. The sightlines and contact with the outside make the building clear, facilitate navigation and contribute to a building that is emphatically part of its surroundings. The Public Transport Terminal is the centrepiece of an ambitious urban development in which a former industrial and marshalling yard is being transformed into a vibrant new city quarter. The complex is designed as a perfectly fitting part of and for the city of Breda: full of character and tightly interwoven with the surrounding buildings
