Description

Next summer, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and The New Institute, which holds the world's largest architecture collection, are showing a stunning overview of drawings, models and furniture pieces from this influential art movement. Brought together for the first time, the works offer surprising insights: that which appears unambiguous or simple is ambiguous and complex. And what seems new sometimes turns out to have been around for some time.

Belief in progress, optimistic, idiosyncratic and idealistic, that is De Stijl. What began in 1917 as the name of a magazine grew into an icon of modernity around the world. In 2017, the Netherlands will celebrate 100 years of De Stijl with the celebration year Mondrian to Dutch Design. With the world's largest Mondrian collection - and also one of the broadest De Stijl collections - the Gemeentemuseum is the centrepiece of this festive year. The exhibition Architecture and Interiors. Yearning for Style spotlights the applied designs of the Dutch instigators of modernist design
