The theme: GAME ON - from strategy to execution

Gaming. Young people can hardly live without it. But beyond the games we play to entertain ourselves, there is another category of games: serious games. This is certainly not new; already in the 1980s and occasionally perhaps even earlier, games were used seriously for various purposes. Since then, countless applications have been developed: from basic training to strategic analysis. But technological advances are already making possible new forms and applications of serious games that we had little or no knowledge of until recently.

For instance, advanced simulation technology offers the possibility of allowing many more scenarios than the pre-cooked storyline as was mostly common. Virtual reality and holography a support maximally realistic visualisation. And in-depth research into the relationship between performance in a game and performance in reality has significant added value for recruitment, selection, education, training, logistics, tactics and doctrine development as well as strategy and policy development, among others. Creating powerful internet connections for online gaming which significantly lowers the threshold for international cooperation.

In short, the possibilities are rapidly increasing. Also for Defence which, with this theme, also connects to the perception of young people as potential employees. At the Kooy symposium, we will discuss new and as yet unknown and unprecedented possibilities of gaming and the technological developments behind it. From strategy to implementation.
