Description

Defence invests a lot in building knowledge at knowledge institutes. It also works closely with the defence industry in developing defence-specific technologies. To make even better use of the results of these investments, make them more widely known and convert them into more concrete solutions, Defence Research & Development organised another Innovation Game at the end of June.

NLR, TNO, Defence and the defence industry are aware of each other's issues and know each other's capabilities. Research and development take place in a structured way and often with excellent results. But sometimes it is useful to take some extra time to listen carefully to each other and exchange views. To use each other's creativity to look at problems and solutions differently, using the same knowledge of organisation and technology. Hence the Innovation Game. Relieved from their daily work, the participants exchanged ideas together for three days, with the aim of coming up with promising innovative ideas.

In recent months, the four winning consortia of the Innovation Game 2009 have been busy with a feasibility study. During the closing afternoon on 27 November 2009, the proposals will be presented and a winner will be announced.

The four projects are:

FAST (Fast Autonomous Swarmed Transport)
The basic idea is to move as much functionality as possible from the operational base to a "service base" in the safe(r) hinterland, supported by an innovative logistical concept.

SWARMS
Development of an autonomous system, capable of independently organising the functions of observation, interpretation, assessment and decision support (the alert function) as required.

CHLOE (Channelled Live Operational Enabler)
In the well-known television series 24, Chloe is the woman who provides protagonist Jack Bauer with information from behind her desk for his missions in the city. The idea is to similarly provide infantry patrols with an information display on which continuous live and interactive support is provided. That information is provided by an information manager that interacts with and anticipates the patrol's progress.

Go4IT
The developers envision a multi-level, multi-player serious game that visualises the implications of decisions and actions between operational, tactical and strategic levels. This tool can be used as a training and educational tool to support the comprehensive approach to managing crisis.

The winner will be chosen from among these 4 projects and will receive the KIVI NIRIA Award 2009
