Defence and declining energy security
Description
WHAT FOR ENERGY, WHEN AND AT WHICH PRICE
Defence is investing in weapons systems that will last up to 40 years. In those 40 years, the transition from fossil fuels to alternatives will fundamentally change the energy market. How should Defence respond to these developments? Already, the supply of sufficient diesel to deployment areas is fragile and very costly. A litre of diesel at Camp Holland cost almost €100.
Dependence on the uninterrupted supply of fuel is becoming an increasing security risk. In what ways can Defence improve its energy security through energy conservation, other fuels/techniques and the development of more energy-efficient weapon systems?
