European defence cooperation
Description
The severe cuts in defence spending in many European countries since the outbreak of the financial crisis are forcing far-reaching forms of military cooperation. If not, Dutch and European ambitions to play a significant role in crisis situations on and near the European continent can no longer be realised. The NATO operation in Libya once again demonstrated Europe's serious military shortcomings. These could only be overcome thanks to US military assistance, but US support in similar conflicts is becoming more and more uncertain. It is only through close cooperation with other national armed forces that the Netherlands can maintain military action capability and thus international influence. The savings that can be found through European defence cooperation should not pave the way for new defence budget cuts. In that case, the Netherlands would risk disqualifying itself as a reliable cooperation partner, the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV) concludes in its report 'European defence cooperation: sovereignty and capacity to act'. The report will be discussed in Nieuwspoort on 2 April.
