Description

KIVI NIRIA Defence and Security, in cooperation with the DECIS lab in Delft, TNO and Thales R&T, is organising a workshop on Serious Games on 4 June 2009.

Serious Games can make an important contribution to the development of ideas, procedures and technology. Serious Gaming is also a cost-effective option for realistic training.

You can use it to develop and test non-existent products in a non-existent environment. Realistic training under very dangerous conditions is also possible. What is too expensive, too dangerous or too complex in the "real" world can be done in the virtual environment of a Serious Game.

Especially in the Defence and Security world, it can be of great importance to realise, test and train the best systems under the most extreme circumstances.

Serious Games can be divided into four categories:
a. Strategy development
Choosing the best approach to a problem by running games in different scenarios. For example urban development, Olympic Games 2028
b. System Development
Assess in a given scenario whether development or introduction of new technologies or systems makes sense and contributes to solving the problem. This can lead to decisions on application or adaptation of the development process.
For example: introduction of Ballistic Missile Defence or cruise missiles on Dutch frigates, Technologies to deter pirates from hijacking ships.
c. Procedure development
Using given resources in given scenarios, identify the best procedures to use. For example: Surgeon interventions, firefighting, crisis management.
d. Training.
Using given resources, scenarios and procedures, teach users to recognise different situations and practise alone or in teams.

The workshop starts with short introductions to these four uses of Serious Games. This is followed by a "tasting" of five different games. In this tasting session, you can get to know the possibilities of Serious Gaming for yourself
