Description

The Johan de Witt Conference will be held in Rotterdam on Thursday 31 August from 13:00 to 17:00. The theme is the increase in Russian maritime activities and the threat to Western maritime interests posed by this. You are welcome to attend the conference after registering via the conference website (link at the bottom of the page). Afterwards, you are cordially invited aboard Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman to attend the World Port Days opening reception.

The Johan de Witt Conference is the Netherlands' largest maritime strategic conference. It is organised annually at the start of the World Port Days. At the meeting, we aim to interpret Russian actions, understand the underlying objectives and explore the implications for European maritime interests with a number of speakers of international stature:

Ambassador Darius Semaska is Lithuania's ambassador to the Netherlands. He knows better than anyone else how it is to feel the threat from Russia up close. At the end of his tenure in the Netherlands, he gives insight into the as-yet increasing and the possible consequences it could also have for a country like the Netherlands.

President Trump characterised him as a 'failed general' during the election campaign, but he certainly is not. The Johan de Witt Conference is therefore proud to welcome General (ret) John Allen. The former Marine general has been Deputy Commander of US Central Command and is co-director of the 'Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence, Brookings Institution'.

He will be joined in his talk by former First Sea Lord of the Royal Navy Admiral (ret) Sir George Zambellas who can outline like no other how Russian influences are noticeable in relation to his 'Brittania rules the waves'.

Both flag officers will be accompanied by moderator and co-leader Professor Julian Lindley-French, vice-president Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Julian will address the strategic context in his talk using the Gerasimov doctrine.

Former member of the Lower House of Parliament and foreign commentator Arend Jan Boekestijn affiliated with Utrecht University will provide his commentary on these international speakers in his own unique way
