Water, peace and security
On the evening the lionesses played their semi-final, the main hall of the KIVI building was filled with interested people who came to listen to water envoy Henk Ovink. He gave a lecture on the role water plays in current (world) problems on an ecological, economic, political, health and climatic level. Without value judgement, he outlined the current state of affairs and the expected future when the trends that have started are likely to expire if 'we' do nothing.
The way in which Ovink was able to present such a serious subject full of humour, while stimulating the audience to think along with him about solutions, was extraordinary. Always emphasising that the matter is complex, that global cooperation is a prerequisite for success and that, above all, we should not rely on the current methods we have developed to solve problems. Integral. Holistic. Interdisciplinary.

KIVI Defence and Security, in cooperation with the VVD's Thematic Network International, is organising a special meeting with Water Envoy Henk Ovink. The primary aim of the meeting is to exchange knowledge and discuss the many roles water plays in a world that is rapidly changing due to climate change. Needless to say, the meeting is not a political debate but an exchange of knowledge and discussion on the subject.
As the Netherlands' first special ambassador on water, Mr Ovink travels the world to help countries fight against water, share Dutch knowledge and create awareness on water management and climate change. The Water Envoy reports his observations and advice to three ministers. In his lecture 'Water, peace and security', Mr Ovink will address questions such as: what role does water play in the conflicts of the 21st century? How to prevent forced migration due to water scarcity? How to use the expertise of Dutch companies and institutes to prevent drought?
Admission to the lecture is free for KIVI members. Non-members pay 25 Euro.
Optional use of a sandwich meal prior to the lecture is available at a fee of 15 Euro.
Members of VVD TNI can register via MijnVVD.
