Description

On Wednesday 12 December next, the Aerospace Engineering Department and The Hague Region will organise a lecture evening on the topic "Military Flight Testing in The Netherlands" given by LtKol Tjebbe Haringa (CLSK H-AORE).

The presentation will consist of two parts.
First, the history of military test flying in the Netherlands will be discussed, in particular the shift from 'off-the-shelf' user of weapon systems in the 50s and early 60s to more unique and Dutch-specific modification trajectories. These were necessary because weapons systems continued to be flown for a long time and were therefore in danger of becoming obsolete and because Defence was faced with shrinking budgets.

Next, the current place of the test flight world within the Defence organisation will be discussed and how the acquisition process has changed since the end of the Cold War period.Next, the pitfalls the test flight world can run into when conducting flight tests will be discussed, especially in relation to the other players in the acquisition process and how the results of flight tests are handled. This will be clarified with two practical examples, a flight test on the sensitivity of the F-16 to Limit Cycle Oscillations (LCO) and secondly, a flight test to determine the limits for shedding external fuel tanks.

Finally, the speaker's view will be presented on how such pitfalls can be avoided, namely by making sure that all available knowledge about a problem/system is known and interpreted correctly
