North Korea threat world peace?
Description
Registration via this site only for members of KIVI NIRIA DV.
----------------------------------
On Wednesday 15 May, the Netherlands Society for International Affairs (NGIZ) is organising a meeting on political developments in and around North Korea. A limited number of KIVI NIRIA Defence and Security members are welcome to attend this lecture.
In response to North Korea's nuclear programme, the international community has imposed sanctions against the regime there. These sanctions were further strengthened after a nuclear test in December 2012. In response, the North Korean regime under new leader Kim-Jong-un ordered another nuclear test in February this year. In addition, North Korea is threatening a nuclear attack on the US and has cut all contact with South Korea.
How serious is the threat? Is there a risk of an 'accidental war'? How should we interpret the regime of young leader Kim-Jong un? What can the international community do to get North Korea to abandon its nuclear plans? What is the Chinese stance on this?
These questions will be the focus of this meeting. The topic will be introduced by Koen De Ceuster, affiliated with the Leiden University Institute for Asia Studies and specialising in the history, language and politics of Korea, and by Sico van der Meer, research fellow at the Clingendael Institute where he is particularly concerned with the issue of weapons of mass destruction and non-proliferation issues
Walk-in at 17.00 with coffee and tea, start of lecture at 17.30.
Afterwards, around 19.00, you are cordially invited for an informal drink.
