Towards a low-carbon navy
Description
MARITIM SYMPOSIUM 2014
How do we make the navy and its operations cleaner and more economical? A topic that is alive not only within the navy, but affects the entire maritime sector. During the Maritime Symposium 2014, national and international speakers will present the theme from their own point of view.
There is a worldwide focus on reducing the use of fossil fuels and reducing ship emissions (the emission of exhaust gases from ship engines). Cooperation is being sought in many areas. For instance, several European companies with a stake in shipping are cooperating in the Joules project ('Joint Operations for Ultra Low Emission Shipping'). Defence, too, is actively thinking about this topic and is developing an Operational Energy Strategy. Ambitions and ideas from this Defence-wide vision should be reflected, among other things, in the replacement projects M-frigates, submarines and mine-fighting vessels.
UNIQUE MARITIME SETTING
The Maritime Symposium is a platform for (innovative) developments within the maritime sector. The Royal Netherlands Navy, Netherlands Defence Academy and various industry organisations cooperate in it. This year, the symposium takes place during the 'Clipper Round the World'. Den Helder will be the home port of this international sailing race from 2 to 10 July. Unique is the opening of the Royal Netherlands Naval Institute's new high-tech 'Ship Handling Simulator'
