Unmanned ground vehicles
ON THURSDAY 14 MARCH, THE COMBINED APA-HTB SPRING LECTURE WILL TAKE PLACE AT SOLDIER CHAIN OLIVIER BARRACKS IN SOESTERBERG
A combination of technological developments, changing threats in the world, a different picture of future conflict, the current and future scarcity of personnel and reducing risks for military personnel... These are all reasons why Defence is currently looking with great interest at the possibilities offered by unmanned systems for current and future operations.
The tasks of unmanned systems are sometimes characterised as 'the Dull, the Dirty and the Dangerous'. For instance, unmanned systems can be used to carry cargo, as platforms for sensors and/or weapons or as specific tools to perform high-risk tasks. The Royal Netherlands Army has set up a dedicated unit to expe- rience with Robots and Autonomous Systems (RAS) and thus explore the possibilities for land-based action. Apart from the platforms themselves, this will also focus on threats in the electromagnetic spectrum, such as probing, eavesdropping, denying or jamming connections and GPS signals.
On the afternoon of 14 March, you will be updated on the recently established RAS unit within the Royal Netherlands Army. In addition, the firms Rheinmetall and TBM will tell and demonstrate what the technological possibilities currently are.
