Students, YKE and DV day at the Navy
Description
Specially aimed at Students and Young Engineers, the Royal Netherlands Navy and KIVI DV are offering the unique opportunity for a comprehensive visit to Zr.Ms. Karel Doorman in Den Helder. Participants will be shown around the ship and given ample opportunity to discuss the various aspects of this naval ship with each other and the navy. The Royal Netherlands Navy is sponsoring the visit, making the day free of charge for Young Engineers and students. A small contribution is requested from KIVI Department DV participants.
Sr. Ms. Karel Doorman is the Joint logistic Support Ship (JSS) of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The logistic support ship was added to the naval fleet in April 2015. With a length of 204.7 m and a maximum displacement of 27800 tonnes, it is the largest ship ever built by the Royal Netherlands Navy.
The ship was built for 3 main tasks:
- Supply at sea for support of maritime units.
- Strategic sea transport, including the embarkation and disembarkation of personnel and materiel when port facilities are unavailable or limited.
- Logistical support from sea (seabasing), where the ship serves as a base at sea to conduct and support land-based operations.
These tasks can be carried out worldwide in all parts of the violence spectrum (e.g. during armed conflict, warfare and civil support operations).
Recently, both main electric motors were found to have a design flaw. Motor manufacturer General Electric examined the defective electric motor removed from the ship in April. It was found to have hairline cracks that caused metal parts to break off. In consultation with Defence and shipbuilder Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS), the manufacturer is modifying the design of part of the motor. The 2nd engine will also receive this modification. To remove it, like the 1st engine, an opening has been made in 2 intermediate decks of the ship.
The modifications to be carried out are expected to make the ship ready for operational deployment again by the end of next year. Defence, DSNS and General Electric are making joint efforts to make the ship deployable again as soon as possible.
