Science ahead in Telecommunications
Description
The Telecommunications Department of KIVI NIRIA invites you to the theme evening "Science ahead in Telecommunications".
Three professors in telecommunications will give insight into the progressive developments in their field at the research institutes and universities to which they are affiliated. The topics covered:
Prof Dr Robert Meijer briefly discusses the ICT side of TNO developments like IJkdijk (www.ijkdijk.nl) UrbanFlood (www.urbanflood.eu) and moves on to the ICT of flashy applications ahead. In applications, large amounts of sensors are crucial require a very dynamic telecommunications infrastructure. The examples paint a picture of new forms of Internet, telecommunications and cloud services that he is researching at the UvA and whose concepts he explains, through filmed demonstrations. In the process, current topics such as software defined networks and network function virtualisation are also clarified and put in a scientific perspective. A new perspective on cybersecurity is described.
Research in the group of Prof. Dr. Cees de Laat covers optical and switched networking for Internet transport of massive amounts of data in PetaScale e-Science applications, Semantic Web to describe networks and associated e-infrastructure resources, distributed cross organisation Authorization architectures and Systems Security & privacy of information in distributed environments. With SURFnet he develops and implements projects in SURFnet7 Research on Networks. He works together with the University of California San Diego (UCSD) in the NSF funded OptiPuter and GreenLight projects that have the purpose to create collaborative environments for scientists and to study the energy and carbon footprint of such infrastructure.
Prof Dr Erik Fledderus explains that the evolution of mobile telecommunications technology has not yet ended. The evolution, which started with GSM, continues after 4G. Fledderus will explain that the combination of competition and advancing technology is far from losing momentum and will continue even after the introduction of the 5G standards. However, these are not the only drivers of innovation in mobile telecommunications. The demand side continues to evolve. Fledderus explains that consumers and businesses will start deploying devices that demand the utmost from the mobile telecommunications infrastructure. These information society applications, information society telecommunications infrastructures are already impacting the telecommunications engineer; which will be explained.
