The armed forces of the future
Description
In the coalition agreement, the Rutte II government announced a vision for the armed forces of the future. The reason for this is the cuts in the defence budget and the rising costs of replacing the F16. In the course of this year, the cabinet will present its vision. So every reason to enter into a debate on this. What armed forces does the Netherlands need to safeguard its interests? What are those interests? What kind of armed forces can the Netherlands afford how? Does international cooperation offer solace when it comes to the organisation of the armed forces? And what to do with the JSF?
These issues will be discussed on Wednesday afternoon 27 March during a topicality seminar organised by the Clingendael Institute and the Netherlands Society for International Affairs (NGIZ).
KIVI NIRIA DV members are also welcome to attend this seminar as long as space is available.
Speaker(s)
The discussion will be introduced by Ko Colijn, Director of Instituut Clingendael and co-author of a recently published Clingendael report, which elaborates on four profiles for the armed forces of the future. After this, a panel consisting of, among others, Mr Jan Gruiters (IKV/Pax Christi) Lieutenant-General b.d. Peter Striek ( chairman Vereniging Ons Leger) and Mr Theo van den Doel (former defence spokesman for the VVD Lower House party) will enter into a discussion with each other and the audience.
