Description

To detect submarines, the Royal Navy relies on the use of active sonar systems. The complex underwater environment confronts the operational user with many limitations, making it difficult for sonar systems to detect threats guaranteed, in time and at sufficient distance.

This evening will explain how that underwater environment affects the sonar image. New techniques will be explained that can reduce environmental disturbances. The aim of these developments is to respond to increasingly silent submarines while at the same time using sonar systems responsibly.

Responsible use of sonar also means taking into account possible negative effects of those systems. This evening will also explain how the Dutch Navy deals with this, including images and sound of the recent research campaign by TNO and foreign partners in the North Atlantic into the effects of sonar on whales.
