Description

On 22 June 2017, the 'Guardion Submarine Trainer' (GST) was officially opened at the Royal Navy. The GST simulates the right-hand side of the command centre of a Walrus-class submarine, with as real a 'look and feel' as possible. All sensors and subsystems are simulated, including the sonar systems, optronic mast, torpedo weapon system and communication systems. The new GST was necessitated by the modernisation and life extension of the now 25-year-old Walrus class submarines (the IP-W project), where an entirely new Command management system 'Guardion' was installed and other sensors were also installed. This will allow these boats to last another 10 years, until their replacement. What is special is that this Guardion system and the GST, with all simulations, were made 'in-house' in Den Helder. This means lower costs.

Piet de Jong
The GST is named after former prime minister and former submarine commander P.J.S. de Jong. This training facility is used for initial operational training, team training, training for crews of the IP-W submarines and for (international) submarine commander training.
