An information meeting on the Preparatory Action on Defence Research will take place at RVO in The Hague on Thursday 19 January 2017.

Deploying and acquiring new resources in the defence domain is expensive and technologically complex. EU spending on defence declined sharply from 2001, with major implications for R&D spending. Together with the shrinking of these budgets, the fragmentation of the European market creates unnecessary duplication of R&D, organisational structures and spending. This leads to the risk of Europe falling behind in important areas of expertise and losing its independence in key areas for defence.

Therefore, a defence-related R&D programme is emerging to overcome these trends. It should contribute to strengthening the European defence market, promote standardisation and foster synergies between civilian and military technologies. Between 2017-2019, this programme will be limited in scope, allowing the EC to gain experience in its implementation. After 2020, there will be a full-fledged defence research programme.

The Netherlands Defence and Security Industry Foundation and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland) are organising an information meeting on the Preparatory Action on Defence Research on Thursday 19 January 2017.
Participants are research institutes, universities, companies, and governments. The aim is to give more insight to interested parties, into the activities and objectives of this new research programme. KIVI members are welcome to attend.

During this afternoon, you will learn more about the topics on the research agenda of the Preparatory Action on Defence Research and the conditions for participation.
