"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
New materials for sustainability as well as operational benefits.
Sustainability has long since ceased to be a buzzword or hype. There is awareness within both government and industry of the need to contribute to saving our exhaustible fossil resources. But the topic certainly does not only offer obstacles and vague visions of the future. Sustainable solutions can also lead to the reduction of the logistics footprint, new operational capabilities and improve the image of the armed forces. New materials - such as composites and nanomaterials - can play an important role in this regard.
The Kooy symposium 2017 makes a direct connection between the themes of sustainability, new materials and operational benefits for the Armed Forces. In doing so, the Operational Energy Strategy (OES) adopted in 2016 is one of the starting points. But there is more!
Applicability within Defence
Both at TNO and NLR and in the industry, there have been the necessary developments in the field of new materials and sustainability in recent years. Materials that are stronger, more wear-resistant, lighter, more resistant to extreme temperatures, chemicals or corrosion. There are also materials that can be given any wonky shape with current production methods such as 3D printing. Also in bulk.
This can also benefit the armed forces in its entirety. After all, lightweight means lower fuel consumption and thus a smaller logistic footprint and lower costs. During the symposium, we will try to answer the question of what composites, plastics and chemical coatings can mean for submarines and aircraft, but also for bridges and the smart-base.
The future has already begun
Dutch companies will also show some striking applications during the symposium that also offer opportunities for the armed forces. 3D printing of protective equipment on location or producing parts on site is closer than many assume.
