Defence is a major user of energy for the operational deployment of its military and equipment. Defence challenges Dutch SMEs and startups to come up with new, original ideas to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in missions. The winner will receive a development contract of €200,000. Come to the information day in Utrecht on 7 July!
For the most part, fossil fuels are used now. Large logistical efforts and expenses are required to get fuel to end users. This dependence on energy poses risks for both operational deployment and logistics supply.
In its "Operational Energy Strategy" (OES), Defence has set the ambition to structurally reduce energy dependence in the future, to become more independent from fossil fuels and to increase the knowledge base and innovative capacity in the energy field. The OES pronounces on what Defence wants to achieve, but not how.
This competition is explicitly about energy in military missions and operations in the deployment area. Out-of-area operations have priority. Civilian application on behalf of Defence buildings and infrastructure in the Netherlands are outside the scope of the DIC.
Defence challenges Dutch SMEs and startups to come up with new, original ideas for this year's theme. The winner will receive a €200,000 development contract from Defence to demonstrate their proposal. The 1st round of the competition closes on 22 August and the winner will be selected from 5 finalists during the closing day on 4 November.
On 7 July 2016, Defence will organise an information day at the Kromhout Barracks in Utrecht.
