The Politics and DV Engineering working group analyses current political developments in the defence sector. It provides independent facts and interpretation from engineers' technological knowledge and experience.
The Politics and DV Engineering Working Group has the following comments and questions on the DMP-D letter dated 15 March 2019 for the replacement of the Alkmaar class mine action vessels. The comments have been prepared based on publicly available information and defence technology knowledge and experience.
Joint acquisition of large equipment by Belgium and the Netherlands can be an example of how defence equipment cooperation can be shaped in Europe. Inherently, own national interest has to be abandoned on some points. The best military-technical, R&D and industrial capabilities can then be put to their best use for the benefit of all partners. However, cooperation must be mutually beneficial for each party to flourish. The working group is not convinced that this is the case in this DMP-D. Not even through the swap with the frigate project.
