Solve complex technical problems at Defence

Do you want to learn how to solve complex technical operational problems around military systems and missions? Do you find modelling and simulation challenging and would you like to contribute to improved systems within the Dutch armed forces for the future? Then the master's in Military Technology, Processes & Systems (MTPS) at the Netherlands Defence Academy(NLDA) is for you!

During this broad-based master's programme, you will learn about the complexity of modern military-technical systems and processes. You will analyse, evaluate and try to create improvements through modelling and simulation, among other things. By the end of the master, you will have improved your critical, analytical and methodological skills and understand the most complex technical processes within Defence.

Who is it for?
The master's in MTPS is of interest to anyone who wants to understand integration and optimisation problems of modern military systems. Are you not yet familiar with Defence, but looking for a career within defence-related industry or (inter)national research centres? If so, this master's degree is also a perfect fit for you!

The accredited scientific master's programme is intended for both civilian students and Defence employees (both civilian and military). We do require a minimum of 6 years of work experience or 2 completed positions. Do you have prior technical training? Then you will be admitted without question. Defence personnel with a Bachelor's degree in Military Systems and Technology (Faculty of Military Sciences) will also be admitted immediately.

Can I take a premaster's degree?
Anyone with a completed relevant hbo degree can take a premaster's degree. Especially for this group, the Faculty of Military Sciences has a tailor-made self-study premaster programme. Registration for the 2022 premaster can be done until 31 December 2021 via master.mtps@mindef.nl.

The premaster consists of 6 elements with a total study load of 30 EC in a self-study variant. (no lectures). Examinations are taken at the faculty location in Den Helder. A lecturer is available for guidance. Successful completion of the premaster provides the appropriate level of prior education and gives access to the master's programme.

How long does this master's take?
The master's takes 2 years and can be taken part-time. Lectures are weekly on Fridays at the faculty location in Den Helder. You study with a small group of a maximum of 30 students. This allows lecturers to give a lot of personal attention. In addition to the weekly lecture day, students spend an average of 1.5 days a week on self-study.

What does the master consist of?
The master comprises 60 EC (credits) and consists of 5 compulsory core courses and 2 elective courses of 15 EC each (processes track and systems track). The study is completed with a thesis of 20 EC.

What are the costs?
Are you not yet employed by the Ministry of Defence? Then you pay the regular WO tuition fee.

For military and civilians already working at the Ministry of Defence, the master's programme is free of charge. No tuition fees are payable. NLDA provides the study materials.
Civilians need permission from the director or commander. For military personnel, permission is needed from the career counselor/employability advisor of their operational command.
