The Defence and Security Department's Politics and Engineering Working Group analyses current political developments in the defence sector. It provides independent facts and interpretation from the technological knowledge and experience of engineers.

Our Politics and Defence Engineering working group has studied the DMP-B letter "Replacement of initial pilot training capability" dated 26 January 2023 and is impressed by the proactive plan to carry out 60 per cent of the initial training of Royal Air Force pilots in a simulated manner. The plan is to replace 13 aircraft that are now 40 years old with eight new aircraft and two simulators. Deployment of simulation technology thus gives a very substantial contribution to more effective training at lower cost.

This decision by the Defence Secretary fits well with the working group's comments on the initial proposal for this replacement in the DMP-A of 13 January 2021.

The working group did offer some further questions on this proposal to the House of Representatives. These concern international cooperation, quantitative resource requirements, alternative funding and the planned period of use. You can find them here.
