The Politics and DV Engineering working group analyses current political developments in the defence sector. It provides independent facts and interpretation from the technological knowledge and experience of engineers.

The Politics and DV Engineering Working Group has the following questions and comments on the DMP-B for the replacement of the M-Frigates, published by the Secretary of State for Defence on 24 June 2020. The comments have been prepared based on publicly available information and defence technology knowledge and experience.

The DMP-B letter on M-frigate replacement completes the second major step of in preparing the replacement of the last two M-frigates. The new ships were supposed to be delivered in 2025 and 2026, but the letter states that this will unfortunately be 3 years later.

The working group is delighted to read in the DMP-B letter that these frigates will be designed and built in a manner that is customary and effective for an advanced client. This fully suits our country with a mature shipbuilding industry and a large knowledge base.
Of additional importance here is that the military part of this knowledge base at TNO, MARIN and other knowledge institutes is uniquely funded and maintained by the government

It can be inferred from the B letter that iteration between different solutions from a strong knowledge base with a reliable partner as "architect" is essential to achieve a highly effective design. Both in terms of capabilities, schedule and price!

Despite a positive reception, the working group still has some questions about the DMP-B. These can be found here.
