Scoop during Rotterdam Processing Week: masterclass on Material Modelling & Design by TU/e researcher Dr Payam Poorsolhjouy.
On Wednesday 1 October at 15:00, Rotterdam Processing Week will present a special first at the Chemtech theatre: an exclusive masterclass by Dr Payam Poorsolhjouy, Assistant Professor of Applied Mechanics at TU Eindhoven.
This session is made possible by the Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI) and the Dutch Process Technologists (NPT) department.
Topic: from pharmaceutical tablets to 3D concrete printing
Titled "Material Modelling and Design applied to Pharmaceutical Tablets and 3D Concrete Printing", Poorsolhjouy shows how materials science and process technology are mutually reinforcing. He explores how the interaction of the smallest material elements can lead to the development of new multifunctional materials and structures.
His insights are directly applicable to diverse sectors: from the compacting of powders in the pharmaceutical industry to innovative applications in the construction sector with 3D concrete printing.
About the speaker
Dr Poorsolhjouy received his PhD with special honours from the University of Kansas (USA) in 2016 and did postdoctoral research at Purdue University. He joined TU Eindhoven in 2020. His expertise lies in materials modelling and design, with a focus on granular and particulate material behaviour.
Besides pharmaceutical tablets and concrete, his work also focuses on cohesive materials (such as rocks and concrete), non-cohesive materials (such as soils) and complex fibre-reinforced composites.

KIVI and NPT as a bridge to the professional field
The masterclass is co-organised by KIVI and the Dutch Process Technologists (NPT). This department, with over 1,200 members from industry and education, unites chemical engineers and chemists and acts as a knowledge and networking platform within the Dutch process industry.
With this contribution, KIVI and NPT underline their role in knowledge development and making innovative engineering visible.
Rotterdam Processing Week 2025
The Rotterdam Processing Week (1 & 2 October 2025, Rotterdam Ahoy) is the two-day trade and networking event for the entire process industry. With three exhibitions - Solids (bulk & process technology), Pumps & Valves (liquids & gases) and M+R (measurement and control technology) - plus the new Energy in Processing knowledge platform powered by ISPT, the event offers more than 220 exhibitors and 30 knowledge sessions for an estimated 3,000 professionals.
