The knowledge hub for renewable energy in Brabant

19 May 2017 by Avans University of Applied Sciences

Empowering businesses, governments and consumers to take control of their own energy use. That is the mission of the Avans lectureship Smart Energy. In this lectureship, students and lecturer-researchers work on technical solutions for less and sustainable energy use. Lecturer Jack Doomernik, explains the research plans during his lecture speech on 19 May.

All the lectorate's research revolves around issues from business, civil society organisations and governments. Based on discussions with the field and its own mission, the Smart Energy professorship has chosen one central question: how can we use technical developments to ensure energy savings and better use of sustainable energy?

Jack Doomernik: 'I have given my professorship the subtitle "control your own energy". That's what it's all about. The development and application of the necessary technology is not a goal in itself, but an important precondition. A sustainable society starts with yourself, of course. With the professorship, I want to help everyone who wants to make the switch to sustainable energy.'

Broad approach

The professorship takes a broad approach. After all, the transition to sustainable energy is complex and raises questions about technology, economics, behaviour and regulations. The first theme the researchers focus on is "measuring & knowing": how can consumers, companies and governments gain more insight into their energy consumption to make the right decisions about their energy management?

The second leg of the research is "embedding & linking": how can we embed decentralised renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and heat in the energy infrastructure in and around the home, in the distribution network and in industry?

And finally, the professorship focuses on "consuming & prosuming": how can technical tools facilitate energy-efficient behaviour and use of (decentralised) sustainable energy?

For society and education

With the applied research within the professorship, Avans wants to ensure better education and a stronger knowledge base for companies and institutions. Students learn to do research and acquire the most up-to-date knowledge. Companies and institutions can use the knowledge and skills of Avans' researchers, teachers and students.

Description

On Friday 19 May at 3 pm in Breda, Jack Doomernik will start his lecture speech. Jack is a lecturer in Smart Energy at Avans University of Applied Sciences' Expertise Centre for Sustainable Innovation.

Energietransitie
We are in the midst of an energy transition in which sustainability can no longer be ignored in our daily lives. To make the transition to a sustainable society, it is necessary to use less energy.

The energy we need must be generated from sustainable sources as much as possible and, if there is no other way, we must use fossil fuels. But as efficiently as possible.

With the lectureship Smart Energy, Jack focuses on the question of how to improve and increase energy saving and integration of sustainable energy with the help of technological developments. In his lectureship, he will also announce his research plans for the coming years.

Avans University of Applied Sciences wants to cooperate actively with the business community through the Lectureship Smart Energy.

This lectureship fits in perfectly with the KIVI programme EnergyNL2050, in which the objective is to arrive at a low-CO2 energy supply in 2050.

If you are unable to attend the lectureship, you can indicate when registering that you only wish to receive Jack Doomernik's publication.
