Description

Excursion to the Energetic North: Chemie Park Delfzijl, Delesto Heat Power plant and Fuel Cell Pilot plant Delfzijl; and TenneT's converter station in Eemshaven.

The programme includes:
Nedstack Technology's Fuel Cell Pilot plant, the 50 kW PEM fuel cell unit (pilot plant). This unit is connected to the 400 V AC power grid and uses hydrogen from the membrane electrolysis plant to supply energy to the plant. The pilot plant is a joint project of NedStack Fuel Cell Technology B.V. Arnhem and Akzo Nobel Industrial Chemicals B.V. More than 500 MWh were supplied to the grid by NedStack's fuel cells from April 2007 to June 2009. The lifetime of the fuel cells is tested with the setup. Meanwhile, the cells last more than 6,000 hours with a good prospect of 10,000 hours.

The Delesto Combined Heat and Power plant, one of the largest Combined Heat and Power plants in Europe.

Akzo Nobel's Chlorine Production Plant at Delfzijl. The chlorine plant is a very modern chlorine plant , with very low energy consumption. Started up in 2006, it uses the very latest technology in membranes.

After lunch at AkzoNobel, we visit TenneT's converter station in Eemshaven; this is where the NorNed high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable from Norway comes ashore, and where the direct current is converted into alternating current (and vice versa).
The supplier of these installations (ABB) will give a lecture there on the future possibilities of HVDC, on land and at sea (in the context of the cabinet's wind turbine plans; 6000 MW at sea).

We will conclude with a meal. We expect to return you to the NS Station in Assen before 20.00 (departure train towards Zwolle) in the evening.

Due to the travel distance and time to the North, we will depart by bus from the NS Station (also P&R) in Assen at 10.00 am.
(Departure train The Hague 07.36; Utrecht 08.20; Eindhoven 07.14; Zwolle 09.15; Return journey: arrival train Zwolle 20.44, Utrecht 21.40; The Hague 22.25 and Eindhoven 22.58).
