Advance notice: Symposium on Dark Sky ā the Achillesā heel of the energy transition?
SAVE THE DATE 17 September 2026
The Dutch energy transition is in full swing. Wind and solar energy are accounting for an ever-increasing share of our energy supply. But what happens when the wind drops for a prolonged period and the sun barely shines?
This phenomenon, known as āDonkerluwteā (Dunkelflaute), could have major consequences for the reliability of our future energy supply. During such periods, there is a shortfall in renewable electricity generation, whilst demand for energy may actually be high. What risks does this pose for grid operators, energy producers, industry, the government and consumers? And what solutions are available or under development?
Dark lull (Dunkelflaute)

On 17 September 2026, KIVIās Electrical Engineering Division is organising a symposium at which experts will examine this current challenge from various perspectives. Topics to be covered include:
- the impact of āDonkerluwteā on the Dutch energy system;
- the role of energy storage and hydrogen;
- the challenges facing grid operators and electricity generators;
- possible solutions for a robust and sustainable energy supply.
Programme
The programme is currently being finalised. Representatives from the energy sector, network operators and industry will share their views.
Please save the date in your diary. Further details about the programme, the speakers and registration will follow shortly.
