The transportation of people and goods has long been done using vehicles powered by fossil fuel. The result is emissions of CO2, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Globally, reducing CO2 emissions from transport is therefore seen as necessary. Hence, by 2035, no petrol/diesel cars should be produced. Car manufacturers are preparing and, for now, produce electric cars with batteries alongside petrol cars. For a long time, Tesla was the leader in making cars that get their energy from batteries. Thanks in part to Elon Musk's efforts, modern batteries now have a much greater capacity, giving battery electric cars an ever-increasing range. All major car manufacturers have followed Tesla and are also producing battery-powered passenger cars.

So what about hydrogen as an energy source for transport? There is growing attention to hydrogen in the energy transition: attention to how and where to produce it, where to apply it and how to get it there. Several consortia are developing plans, including for producing hydrogen at sea. Currently, hydrogen is thought to be applied mainly in industry, freight transport and here and there in heating a residential area. Only a few venture into building and marketing trucks using hydrogen as an energy source. Our country too has one such pioneer! Hoogezand-based Holthausen Gassen has been supplying gases for industrial use since 1945. Almost a decade ago, Carl Holthausen director of Holthausen Clean Technology started using hydrogen to power various vehicles such as sweepers, commercial vans, gully cleaners and trucks with an electric powertrain: electric motors, hydrogen tanks and a fuel cell. The province and municipality of Groningen were among their first customers. In a joint venture called Hyzon, Holthausen and a US partner are building new hydrogen-powered trucks in Winschoten. Customers are all over Europe and the rest of the world.
With this activity also comes the need to solve the problem of being able to refuel hydrogen. Here, too, Holthausen is active.

The company's managing director, Carl Holthausen, explained the developments within his company and the technology of electric, hydrogen-powered, trucks.
