E Lunch webinar: 'Becoming self-sufficient with solar power'
Solving grid congestion with solar power and battery storage
Demand for power is skyrocketing due to large-scale electrification. More and more companies are generating and using their own sustainable energy, including solar energy. The increased feed-in of solar energy and electrification of transport and heat is putting extra pressure on the Dutch electricity grid.
Transmission capacity is under pressure and the capacity map is becoming increasingly red, both for supply and for feed-in. Grid operators cannot and need not solve this alone. Because with the combination of solar energy, energy storage and with smart software, locally generated energy can also be used locally.
In this way, Joulz can solve grid congestion faster and more sustainably and make a positive contribution to the energy transition.
How does a mega solar roof combined with energy storage perform in practice?
It is being applied in an increasing number of places, such as project AMS05 at Schiphol Trade Park, see schematic above.
Practical case Schiphol Trade Park location AMS05
Schiphol Trade Park is a large business and logistics hub close to Amsterdam's international airport Schiphol. In October 2020, the area was labelled a congestion area by the local grid operator. This meant that no additional transmission capacity is available for the business park. With major consequences for, among other things, the development of the AMS05 distribution centre, designed by Intospace. In fact, construction was already in full swing.
Thanks to the unique energy system, the Virtual Power Grid, which Joulz built, the project was nevertheless realised in the short term.
More than 20,000 solar panels were installed on the roof. This energy can be stored and used at the less sunny moments. For example, at night or during the winter period. Enough power is generated to supply 2,500 households in addition to the distribution centre.
The distribution centre has now been completed and has been operational for more than six months. Sanne Castro (Joulz) will be happy to tell you more about the practical experience, the performance of the solar roof and the Virtual Power Grid.
